Nature and outdoor recreation

Leave the asphalt and the crowds behind and make your way to the city's beautiful nature areas. Uppsala and its surroundings have everything from blooming meadows, groves and deep forests for recreation to a vast array of outdoor activities.

Uppsala Municipality is home to many wonderful areas for recreation, where you can experience nature and enjoy the outdoors.

Discover the city's green open spaces on foot or by bike. There are plenty of trails and walking paths for everyone who likes to walk, run or hike in beautiful natural surroundings. Årummet, Upplandsleden, The Linnaeus Trails and Gula stigen are just a few examples.

If you enjoy the outdoors, then new experiences are waiting just around the corner. There is plenty to do and see within just a short distance. Many of the city's open-air recreation areas have been made accessible, so they are easy to get to and are accessible to everyone.

Open-air recreation and nature areas

Open-air recreation areas such as Hammarskog, Fjällnora and Sunnersta are open to the public all year round. In the summer, you can enjoy the long exercise trails, swim, fish, watch birds or go canoeing. Some of the areas have adventure courses, climbing walls or other ground-level activities for a “wilderness experience”. When the winter comes and the waters freeze, ice skating paths are ploughed and ski runs laid out. Sunnerstaåsen has ski slopes with lifts for anyone who wants to go exploring by ski or snowboard.

Canoeing or kayaking

If you want to go canoeing or kayaking, you are in luck. There are plenty of choices and the Uppland canoe trails are both safe and easy to paddle. Fyrisån River has a beautiful canoe trail that starts in Vattholma, twenty kilometres north of the city centre, and ends at the Fyrishov sports centre in the city. You can also take a whole-day tour traveling 18 kilometres along the Kolarmoraån canoe trail, starting from Lake Vällen. If you are a beginner, you can book courses in sea kayaking or canoeing at an open-air recreation area or from a rental facility.
