At Tropiska Växthuset (Tropical greenhouse) you will find Uppsala’s only rainforest, with palms, banana trees, coffee trees and orchids. Plants originating from a hotter climate are grown here, from deserts, rainforests and other exotic locations. Stroll around among lianas, gigantic leaves and insectivorous plants. On sunny days the intensive croaking of the poison dart frogs can be heard amidst the foliage.
The greenhouse is also home to many tropical cultivated plants, e.g. Manila hemp used for tea bags, oil palms used for soap and shampoo, the cacao tree that produces chocolate and the sacred lotus with edible nuts. One of the biggest greenhouse plants is the giant water lily, with impressive huge leaves from July to September and flowers on summer nights.
