TO DO Winter in Uppsala

Winter in Uppsala

Ice blue sky, sun and sparkling snow; the city suits its winter attire. Uppsala is just as pleasant to visit in winter as in summer and there are fun activities here that are unique to each season.

Downhill skiing and snowboarding

Sunnerstaåsen is a popular outdoor recreation area suitable for winter activities. At Gropbacken you have sledge runs in two directions and on the riverside you’ll find slopes for downhill skiing on either skis or snowboards. During the winter season, all the slopes are floodlit in the evening and lift passes can be purchased there.

Cross-country skiing

In winter, there are lots of areas for cross-country skiing. The Municipality of Uppsala prepares many fine ski runs and, in addition to the jogging tracks around the municipality, an additional 110 km or so of tracks are prepared.

You will find the longest continuous track system between Hågadalen and Hammarskog. There are other ski runs at Fjällnora open air recreation area, Röbo, Björklinge open air recreation area and alongside the Fyrisån River between Vilan and Flottsund.

You will find the Municipality's list of jogging tracks and ski runs in Uppsala in the information box.

Long-distance ice skating

When Uppsala's frozen lakes are safe, the Municipality ploughs tracks for ice skating. Twenty kilometres north of Uppsala you’ll find Björklinge open air recreation area with ice skating on Långsjön Lake. Trehörningen Lake in Fjällnora is cleared of snow and you can choose between tracks of distances varying between 2 and 11 kilometres.

From Hammarskog you skate along a ploughed track around Dalbyviken or in to Skarholmen Manor. If you want a trip that is a bit longer, you can continue to Vikingaslingan between Uppsala and Stockholm, the country's longest ice track. The track is on ice where the snow and ice conditions vary, so make sure you are well informed about the condition of the ice along each section.

Public skating

You don't have to travel far to find an ice rink. There are rinks that are open to the public all over the city. You'll find an up-to-date list of these in the information box.

Jig fishing

Travel out to Fyrväpplingen sports fishing camp or choose a suitable place on Lake Mälaren where you can enjoy the winter version of fishing. Make a hole in the ice and pour yourself a mug of hot chocolate, then it's just a case of waiting.

Equipment

Don't you have any equipment? Then you can always rent. Fjällnora open air recreation area rents out Nordic skates and skis with accessories for those who need them.

Do you need to rent snowboards or downhill skis with ski boots and poles? Aktivt Uteliv rents out skiing equipment for adults and children.
